Call Me Dancer: Film Screening & Q&A

Join us for a special screening of Call Me Dancer, the award-winning documentary about passion, perseverance, friendship, and the transformative power of dance.

The film tells the remarkable true story of Manish Chauhan, a 21-year-old self-taught street dancer from Mumbai who dreams of becoming a professional dancer despite his family’s expectations and limited resources. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Yehuda Maor, a feisty 75-year-old Israeli-American ballet master. Their unlikely friendship takes them from the streets of Mumbai to the stages of New York and ultimately transforms both of their lives.

Yehuda began his career as a principal dancer with Israel’s Bat-Dor Dance Company and went on to teach dancers around the world, including ballet legends Rudolf Nureyev and Natalia Makarova. This screening is especially meaningful to the Kaplen JCC community, as Yehuda is now an active member of our Senior Adult community.

Celebrated around the world, Call Me Dancer has earned critical acclaim and numerous international awards, including audience awards at several Jewish and international film festivals.

Following the film, stay for a special Q&A with director Leslie Shampaine and Yehuda Maor. A former professional ballet dancer herself, Leslie brings a unique insider’s perspective to this moving story of mentorship, determination, and the universal language of art.
