Step back to a time when a nickel bought you more than a meal—it bought you a unique dining experience. “The Automat” takes you inside Horn & Hardart’s revolutionary restaurant where people from all walks of life—from Wall Street executives to struggling artists—found a place where everyone was welcome. Inserting coins and opening little glass doors, New Yorkers enjoyed delicious, quality food, fresh coffee, legendary pie and a grand atmosphere.

After screening the documentary, writer/director Lisa Hurwitz will join us to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this film, answer your questions and ask you to share your own memories of the Automat.
