The Lion in Winter: Brahms and His Late Piano Music

with Steven Masi, Faculty Member of the JCC Thurnauer School of Music
In his last years, Brahms created a style of short piano work that explored his innermost feelings. These pieces that he called “Lullabies of my Discontent” are intimate, personal expressions that inspire inward reflection from the pianist and listener. Autumnal in nature, they are the summation of Brahms’ art. In this class Steven Masi will perform and discuss op. 117 and op. 118, from both a musical and biographical point of view.

Thurnauer Symphony Youth Orchestra

Be inspired and join our orchestra for children ages 12+ who have several years of experience playing their instrument. Led by Diego Garcia, young and seasoned musicians perform standard symphonic repertoire, popular selections and contemporary works.  In recent seasons, the orchestra has performed music by Vivaldi, Boccherini, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Smetena, Rimsky-Korsakov, Saint-Seans, Holst and Diego Garcia, among others. The orchestra has performed at BergenPAC in Englewood with world-famous violinist Joshua Bell and jazz guitar legend, Larry Coryell and been conducted by Alan Gilbert, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. The Thurnauer orchestral experience provides an excellent educational and nurturing environment where students play great orchestral music while developing their ensemble skills.

There are performance opportunities during the year including winter and spring concerts where students showcase their talents to their parents, friends and the community. In addition, the Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra holds an annual concerto competition open to all Thurnauer students.
Auditions for 2018-19 will be held on Sunday, June 3 and on Sunday, Sep 16. Please call Robyn Searles at 201-569-7900 ext. 375 to schedule an audition.
