We are excited to be opening our Fall 2020-21 semester on Monday, October 5! Registration is ongoing.
Our model for this semester will be a combination of virtual lessons, occasional in-person lessons and classes, as well as hybrid options. We are following the safety guidelines as set by the CDC and local agencies, as well as parent requests and comfort level. For information on returning to our campus, please visit jccotp.org/faqs. We look forward to having you join us on this musical journey!
Ages 9+ (including adults) – intermediate level If you’re looking for a fun and easy instrument to play, the ukulele is the perfect choice. Students who have acquired the basics of ukulele playing will further their learning about strumming patterns, proper technique and finger movements, fingerpicking patterns, chords and efficient chord changes. Students can contact the instructor regarding purchase of ukuleles, electronic clip-on tuners, and other items. Families welcome to join together. Class size limited to 6 families.
Open to advanced-level pianists, this class provides a deeper understanding of performance issues, musical structures, and the infinite possibilities that go into interpreting piano literature. The instrument has evolved greatly over the course of history, especially throughout the Industrial Revolution. Students study how composers in different eras approached the piano and how they responded to and were inspired by its development. An audition is required. Taught by Steven Masi.
The notion of drummers playing together harks back to the beginning of mankind. Percussion Ensemble comes from that energy combined with the wealth of written pieces over the past century and fills a need for young players to have their own chamber music outlet. Students share melody, harmony and rhythm playing drums, marimba, timpani and many other instruments. Young percussionists improve overall musicianship, especially their skill in following a conductor. Intermediate and advanced percussionists have the opportunity to play as well in the Teen Town Jazz Ensemble and Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra. Prerequisite: Students must have basic rhythmic reading skills with quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes, and rests. Basic keyboard ability with scales and treble clef reading is preferred but not conditional. Concurrent private lessons, either at the Thurnauer School or elsewhere, are required to learn parts.
Audition required for new students. Contact Robyn Searles at rsearles@jccotp.org to schedule an audition.
Playing viola is a valuable skill for violinists. Students explore the unique characteristics and subtle technical differences between the violin and viola, learn to read music in the alto clef, and play pieces written especially for the viola. There are many advantages and opportunities for violinists who also understand the viola. This class is available to violinists who have completed Suzuki Book 3. Class size limited to 6.
For intermediate and advanced flutists who perform standard Flute Choir repertoire. Both solo and group concert opportunities are offered. The class will be divided into two sections, one meeting from 6:45 to 7:45 pm and the other from 7:45 to 8:45 pm.
Experiencing the keyboard allows music students to have a better understanding of musicianship overall and how music is put together. This class is recommended for instrumental students and singers at the elementary or intermediate level. In addition to keyboard orientation and the exploration of piano repertoire, students learn sight-reading and harmony through a supportive, small-group environment. No previous piano experience is necessary. Having a piano or keyboard at home is helpful but not required. Class size is limited to 6 students.
Group classes for private-lesson students are a key component of instrumental instruction, including the Suzuki approach. Classes are offered in cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, percussion, piano, saxophone, violin and viola. Concurrent private lessons, either at the Thurnauer School or elsewhere, are required. Consult recommendation or schedule a placement evaluation to determine level.
