Tikkun Olam in Action: How Kaplen JCC Gives Back

Tikkun Olam in Action: How Kaplen JCC Gives Back

How Kaplen JCC Teaches and Brings Tikkun Olam to Life in the Community

Tikkun olam is a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world,” and at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, it’s a value that guides everything we do. It shapes our daily work, our relationships, and our commitment to the community we serve. Whether we’re supporting families in need, uplifting children of all abilities, or empowering young leaders, we strive to turn this ancient value into meaningful, tangible action. Through thoughtful programs and a deep sense of purpose, we strive to demonstrate what it truly means to make a difference—one step at a time.

What is Tikkun Olam, and Why Does it Matter?

In Jewish tradition, tikkun olam teaches us that we all share a responsibility to help make the world a better place. Sometimes, that looks like a small act of kindness for someone who feels alone; other times, it means creating programs that uplift entire communities. It’s about choosing to care for people, the environment, and justice every day.

At the JCC, tikkun olam isn’t just something we discuss in a classroom or include in our mission statement—it’s a guiding principle that informs our actions. You see it when our staff warmly welcomes a new family, when our teens lead service projects with passion, and how we design our programs with empathy, inclusion, and heart. It’s part of our culture, woven into our conversations, and everyone who walks through our doors is invited to take part in this meaningful work.

Serving the Community with Purpose and Care

One of the most important ways we live out tikkun olam is by showing up for our community. Through food drives, donation efforts, and hands-on support, we make sure help goes where it’s needed most. Our staff and volunteers approach each interaction with kindness and compassion, understanding that asking for help can be difficult. Our goal is always to make people feel seen, respected, and supported.

Helping Teens Become Leaders Through Service

We believe the next generation has the power to create real change, and we’re here to guide them. Our Teen Volunteerism program offers teens meaningful ways to put tikkun olam into action, helping them build leadership skills and a sense of responsibility for their communities. Whether they’re volunteering in youth programs and camps, helping organize and run special events, or participating in community service projects, they’re learning how to make an impact and create positive, lasting change.

Creating Programs That Welcome and Celebrate Everyone

To us, tikkun olam also means ensuring that every person feels welcome, included, and valued. Our Guttenberg Center for Special Services provides enriching programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities, focusing on social, emotional, and life-skill development. We also offer inclusive music opportunities through the Thurnauer School of Music, helping participants build confidence and connection through the creative process. Across all our programs and community events, we strive to promote understanding, celebrate diversity, and foster a stronger, more unified community for everyone.

Let’s Keep Building a Better World Together

At the Kaplen JCC, we know that tikkun olam isn’t about one-time good deeds—it’s about showing up every day and asking, “What can I do to help today?” It could be joining a program, lending a hand to a neighbor, or stepping into a new volunteer opportunity. Every act of kindness makes a difference.

When you get involved with the JCC, you’re joining a movement—one rooted in care, community, and the belief that together, we can build a stronger, kinder world. Learn more about Kaplen JCC on the Palisades by connecting with our team today!
