Curtain Up, Light the Lights

This semester, Professor Dan Jatovsky will present three films that deal with the art of acting and the world of theatre. Each will show how thespians are indeed unique characters.

The Golden Coach (1952) directed by Jean Renoir. Three men of varying social standing—a viceroy, a bullfighter, and a soldier vie for the affections of an actress in 18th century Peru.  (1:45 minutes)

Bullets Over Broadway (1992) directed by Woody Allen In New York in 1928, a struggling playwright is forced to cast a mobster’s talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it produced. (1:38 minutes)

Me and Orson Welles (2008) directed by Richard Linklater. In 1937, a teenager is cast in the Mercury Theatre production of “Julius Caesar”, directed by a young Orson Welles. (1:54 minutes)

Dan will introduce the film with commentary, we’ll screen it together, and then he’ll lead the discussion following the film.  Even if you’ve seen the movie, watching it together and discussing it with an expert makes for a richer experience. Seats please!
