Art Talks with Professor Thomas Germano

Thursday, 4/23 – 11:00 AM
Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100

In his manifesto of Surrealism of 1924, André Breton celebrated the unbridled imagination as the springboard to freedom in all aspects of life. Artists responded by incorporating dreamscapes, applying Freudian psychoanalysis and presenting free associations. Automatic creativity was central to the artists for tapping into the subconscious mind.

This talk will feature paintings, drawings, films, photographs and literary documents associated with the international Surrealist movement, with important works by Dali, Miro, Tanning, Magritte, Ernst, and other artists.

Thursday, 5/7 – 11:00 AM
Banksy and Street Art

Banksy is an anonymous street artist whose identity has been highly speculated but never confirmed. His covert public art pieces are immediately recognizable, cutting to the heart of cultural satire and political commentary. The arena for Banksy’s art is guerrilla street installations, making it at once highly visible to many, while also illegal. This UK-based artist has evaded criminal charges even as his works—and the walls they cover—have fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.

Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the art of Banksy in the context of street art.
