Chevruta in Jeans (חברותא בג’ינס) is a unique and welcoming Jewish learning experience that brings timeless texts, philosophy, values, and contemporary issues into open conversation from a secular and inclusive perspective. Through engaging discussions and thought-provoking topics, participants will explore Jewish identity, culture, and ideas while building meaningful connections and community. 

No prior experience is necessary; bring your curiosity, an open mind, and a desire to learn together.

About the instructor Tami Ben Shachar:  

The series will be facilitated by Tami Ben-Shahar, a member of our community who grew up in an unconventional religious family in Israel and was educated at the same time in Orthodox and secular environments. This cultural fusion shaped her multidisciplinary worldview and will guide us toward unexpected connections throughout the series. Tami brings a rich academic and media background, including degrees from Bezalel, Tufts University and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, alongside her experience as a lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and her many years as a design columnist for The Marker magazine. Under her guidance, we will embark on a fascinating journey bridging “Alice in Wonderland” and the Bible, artificial intelligence and “higher power,” and Talmudic debates with gastronomic recommendations. Together, we will explore Jewish myths to see how they can serve us in our day to day, celebrate our cultural roots beyond definitions and clichés and choose which “souvenirs” to keep from the experience. Ultimately, we will dig into the Jewish bookshelf; a source of endless inspiration for distinctly secular creations and decide whether we want to welcome it into our own private libraries.
