The Threat to American Democracy: What We Can Learn From the Rise of the Nazis Part I
In this two-part series, one of JCC U’s favorite speakers, Columbia Law School lecturer Jess Velona will look at modern German history up to the formation of the Nazi dictatorship. We’ll examine the roots of authoritarianism, militarism and antisemitism in Germany. We’ll learn how defeat in World War I and the harsh Versailles Treaty poisoned the Weimar Republic’s legitimacy. *

The 2024 Whitney Biennial: Even Better Than the Real Thing
Whitney Museum Teaching Fellow Patryk Tomaszewski will introduce us to the latest Biennial. Highlighting select works he will demonstrate the challenges of defining the “real” in today’s tech-immersed American society and will discuss how these challenges shape critical conversations about identity. We’ll look at art across a variety of media and disciplines.
