Spring Term 2024 Back in Person

Top professors and experts present on a diverse array of topics. Rekindle previous passions, ignite new interests, meet new people, and stay involved in the developments that shape today’s world.

May 16

Morning:
The Threat to American Democracy: What We Can Learn From the Rise of the Nazis Part I

In this two-part series, one of JCC U’s favorite speakers, Columbia Law School lecturer Jess Velona will look at modern German history up to the formation of the Nazi dictatorship. We’ll examine the roots of authoritarianism, militarism and antisemitism in Germany.  We’ll learn how defeat in World War I and the harsh Versailles Treaty poisoned the Weimar Republic’s legitimacy. *

Afternoon:
The 2024 Whitney Biennial: Even Better Than the Real Thing

Whitney Museum Teaching Fellow Patryk Tomaszewski will introduce us to the latest Biennial. Highlighting select works he will demonstrate the challenges of defining the “real” in today’s tech-immersed American society and will discuss how these challenges shape critical conversations about identity. We’ll look at art across a variety of media and disciplines.

May 30

Morning:
The Threat to American Democracy: What We Can Learn From the Rise of the Nazis Part 2

See description above. Integrated throughout the series, Jess Velona will consider whether January 6th, the persistent attacks on the 2020 presidential election’s legitimacy, and coarsening political discourse pose equally strong threats to the American democratic tradition. (No worries if you missed the first part, this talk stands on its own.) *

Afternoon:
Mozart’s Concertos

Discover the beauty of Mozart’s concertos with Thurnauer School of Music’s Associate Director, Michael Reingold. Focusing on a few concertos, we will learn about the intricate harmonies and structures that define Mozart’s compositions. Together, we’ll listen to these musical masterpieces in a whole new way.
