The 2021 Handler Cello Master Class will be taught by Astrid Schween, cellist of the Juilliard String Quartet, on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 2 pm. Nominations and Audition videos due Friday, May 7 Audition videos may be submitted via a private YouTube video link or by uploading to a Thurnauer Dropbox account (link to be provided upon application). QUALIFICATIONS: Handler Master Classes are open to pre-college musicians of all ages and levels of training, from elementary to advanced. The criteria for selecting participants include good preparation and serious dedication. Students should be capable of responding to direction. Applicants must be New Jersey or Rockland County, NY residents and must be studying privately at a school or studio in New Jersey or in Rockland County, NY. Students currently enrolled in the preparatory division of a New York or Pennsylvania conservatory are not eligible to participate, unless they are also studying privately at the Thurnauer School of Music. Selected participants must be available on the date of the master class with access to reliable internet service. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS • Beginning Students: one memorized piece with which the student feels comfortable • Intermediate and Advanced Students: Two contrasting selections of the teacher’s choice. Repertoire must be memorized, with the exception of sonatas. WHO SHOULD SUBMIT PAYMENT AND AUDITION DETAILS Audition fees and details may be submitted by either the families of the applicants or the teacher. In most cases, families submit the fees and information. HOW TO SUBMIT A REGISTRATION TO AUDITION To participate in the Handler Master Class auditions, teachers must tell parents of the students that it is okay for them to submit an audition registration. Step 1: Submit the audition fee. To submit online, click on "Register," log into your account (or create a new one if you don't have one), and click on "Register Another Family Member." To pay by check, mail your audition fee of $50 to the JCC Thurnauer School of Music, 411 E. Clinton Ave., Tenafly, NJ 07670 ATTN: Handler Violin Master Class. Available for brass, percussion, piano, strings, winds, and voice, the Young Artists Programs include opportunities for monthly recitals and celebrations. Note: Suzuki guitar requires eight parent education workshops. Students taking private lessons for the first time can take a lessons-only program, but are encouraged to add one or more classes or ensembles. After the first year, all private lesson students are required to add one or more classes or ensembles to their program.
