In our transitional kindergarten, true reading and writing skills emerge. We emphasize phonological awareness and decoding and expose the children to elements of literature such as characters, setting and conflict, all of which help to develop critical thinking skills. Extending upon the Handwriting without Tears foundation established in the 4 year old program, we move towards proper formation of letters and words, and appropriate spacing between words and sentences.
Real math skills mature, including number sense, addition and subtraction using word problems, counting by two, fives, tens and ultimately moving towards telling time and counting money. In the social/emotional domain, we continue to focus on interpersonal skills and developing good citizenship.
