Movie Screening: Stateless

Q&A by Michael Drob, film's director and producer
Join us for a special screening of the acclaimed documentary film, Stateless, about the emigration of Soviet Jews during the late 1980’s. The evening includes a personal introduction and Q&A by the movie’s director and producer, Michael Drob, recipient of the prestigious BluePrint Fellowship.  On the brink of the collapse of the Soviet Union, tens of thousands of Soviet Jews were finally allowed to leave the USSR. What these people did not expect was that their final destination, America, no longer welcomed them with open arms. In 1988, American policy suddenly changed and thousands of Soviet Jews were stranded in Italy.  Movie is appropriate for both Russian and English speakers.

Israeli Society Through the Lens of Cinema

Over the last decade and a half, Israel has emerged as one of the great centers for filmmaking. In addition to its artistic excellence, Israeli cinema provides intimate insights into the dynamic nature of Israel and its diverse people. Prospecting the cinema provides an ideal “lens” by which we gain a greater understanding of Israel’s history, culture and challenges. Through film clips from movies spanning the decades, Dr. Eric Goldman will examine the changing nature of Israeli society as reflected through its cinema.

Eric Goldman is adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University and author of “The American Jewish Story through Cinema.” He is a film critic for The Jewish Standard.

Presented in partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Space is still available. You may pay at the door.

Naomi Shemer - lecture

Cultural Events at the Israeli Center

Once every few generations there is an artist whose intensity and the extent of their work changes the face of culture forever. That was Naomi Shemer. Roy Rameshon is a successful and talented lecturer. In his lecture, accompanied by songs, clips and pictures; he will tell the story of Naomi Shemer's life and work and her use of Jewish roots. From the “Messiah's Messengers”, through “Why Michal Laughed”, “Jerusalem of Gold”, the ‘Praise of Maoz”, the “Singing of the Weeds”, Naomi Shemer was a secret pit of Jewish wisdom. Almost a quarter of the 1000 songs she wrote and composed are references to various and unexpected Jewish writings. In the lecture we will understand where she got the inspiration for her most famous songs and how her life story and the story of the country and the young nation in which she grew up influenced the songs she wrote and composed. This is not just another lecture, but a cultural experience filled with nostalgia, wonderful songs, and exciting moments in the history of the State of Israel.

Beyond our clothes there is a world of meaning. Clothing expresses to the world who we are, our personality and identity. Changing our clothing can have a powerful effect. Even a change in one item, accessory, or color, can change our way of thinking, behavior and emotions. Emotional styling takes the clothing we wear and uses to induce an inner process that affects all areas of our lives. This is an experiential workshop on the connection between our clothing and who we are.

Mother to Mother Support Group

"Mother to mother" in our community "Mother to Mother" is a volunteer program to support young mothers after birth in coping with the challenges that accompany the beginning of the parenting process. The project has been taking place in Israel for many years now, and an independent center of activity is being established at the Israeli Center in the JCC for the Israeli women community in Northern New Jersey, led by Danit Schwartz, Shiri Weinstein and Orit Golan Sela. The volunteers are experienced mothers who will undergo a process of training by a professional team. At the end of the training program, each volunteer will be assigned to a young mother according to the availability of the volunteer. The connection will be carried out according to the needs of the mother, the nature of the volunteer, the availability and convenience of visits. The volunteer framework is a weekly visit for several months. In addition, participants will be required to attend monthly meetings to accompany the process.

Philanthropy and Charity in Israel and America

For Israelis, living in America is an ongoing encounter with a new culture and social norms. For some, the American philanthropic values and the expectations to donate money to schools, urban projects, and the community are new and unfamiliar. The direct requests for donations, sometimes while volunteering, raise questions relating to financial disparities, and the gap between the state and the citizens' responsibilities; and emphasize American individualism. Mostly, they offer a completely different dialogue than what Israelis know about charity and volunteering.

In this lecture, we will talk about donations, philanthropy, and volunteering in America, about the differences between the American and Israeli philanthropy and cultures of giving, and how each of us can develop personal guidelines and "donation policy" for our schools and community. We will also discuss the current golden age of America's major donors (such as Gates and Bloomberg), their political and social influence, ahead of the 2020 elections, and the impact of the “Big Donors” discourse on Israel.

Breaking Your Boundaries

Lecture by the mentor, Idan Buch

  • What have you done today to break your boundaries?
  • In the circle of life we all face multiple challenges. For some of us these challenges are more difficult than others: relationships, family, career, personal development, health and unsolved dilemmas.
  • Are we responsible for the situation we are in?
  • What does success mean to us?
  • Who is keeping us from being successful?
  • Will we ever be able to change our reality?

Idan was born and raised in Tel Aviv. He was born with a rare disease, causing him to be paralyzed during a time when there was a lack of knowledge or known cure for his disease.
When doctors explained this to Idan's mother she refused to give up. Together they began a journey of daily medical and personal challenges. As time went by, in spite of his illness, Idan gained unique mental abilities, breaking the ultimate barrier and standing on his own two feet. Idan enrolled in public school, and became a standard member within Israeli society and volunteered in the police forces. After completing his volunteer service, Idan slowly paved his way to a top management position in one of the leading companies in Israel. To date, Idan is a life coach and business consultant to senior executives in the Israeli economy.

In different and mesmerizing ways, Idan combines personal insight along with his unique mental visions, giving him the ability to create an accurate course of action with any individual.

Michael Lewis, Actor: "Idan met me at a critical crossroad in life. Idan didn't just guide me, he refined and sharpened the person I wanted to be".

In his lectures, Idan shares his story, personal experiences, and explains how he coped and made decisions which essentially allowed him to break the boundaries of mind over matter.

This is the time to break your boundaries. Join us in a unique and breathtaking event! Discover how to break through your personal boundaries with the help of Idan Buch, the creator of the “Boundaries” method.

The workshop will be conducted by Judy Goldberg-Buchnick and Limor Kover

Efrat Leket - Ima Meamenet Workshop

How to stop punishing our children and still get effective results?
No parent feels good after punishing his child. No child feels good after being
punished, and hasn’t necessarily learned his lesson. Then why do we continue using this method?

Mostly because we feel powerless in a situation that we need to give an immediate response. In this workshop we will learn what are the traps that put us in a situation thatForces us to punish – how to avoid them and how do we teach our children proper behavior without punishing.

We will distinguish between children between the ages of 2-4 and children of the ages 4-12.

Jam Session

Robi Damelin grew up in South Africa and moved to Israel.  Her son David, a peace activist and a member of the IDF reserves, was killed by a Palestinian sniper.  Since then, she has dedicated her life to ending the violence and to creating a collaborative, formal truth and reconciliation process that will be ready to roll out when a political peace agreement is reached. Her efforts have been the subject of several documentaries and a TED-Talk.

Bassam Aramin was sent to Israeli prison as a 17-year-old for his role in the Palestinian resistance.  He spent seven years there, and eventually started questioning the value of armed resistance.  Several years after his release, he co-founded “Combatants for Peace.”  He has refused to pick up arms since his release, even when, in 2007, his 10-year-old daughter, Abir, was killed by an Israeli soldier’s rubber bullet on her way home from school.  He is also the subject of a documentary film – Within the Eye of the Storm. He is just completing his Ph.D. in Holocaust Studies.

Kabbalah in Hebrew

What is Kabbalah? The word Kabbalah means ‘to receive’- it is the study of how to receive fulfillment in our lives and discover the meaning of life. Kabbalah allows us to make sense of the world around us and learn the true nature of the universe. It is a wisdom that empowers us to correct sabotaging actions, beliefs, and thoughts that prevent us from attaining everything we came to this world to receive, and more! Kabbalah is a universal wisdom that predates religion and can be studied by anyone regardless of their faith or path.

Yaara Kider - Art and Fashion

Frida Kahlo Hidden Colors

Frida Kahlo is famously known for her Mexican art work. The paintings, the colors, the groundbreaking themes have attracted audiences and researchers for more than half a century, but a lesser known aspect is Kahlo's connection to fashion and dress. Kahlo saw her mirror as an inseparable part of her artistic statement and became one of the most significant inspirations to this day for the world of design, fashion, and culture - from Givenshi and Gautier to Madonna. Pain, beauty, disability, feminism and power are intertwined in the heart of Frida Kahlo's story and clothes. Through textures, colors, clothing, jewelry, subversive feminism, and concepts that were decades ahead of their time.

Fashion curator and historian Yaara Keidar is embarking on a journey in the footsteps of one of the most fascinating figures in history of art.

Yayoi Kusama: A Love Story of Polka Dots

A lecture on madness, creativity, collapse and success, in the wake of the Japanese polka dot artist, Yayoi Kusama. Kusama, one of the most successful artists in the world today, is celebrating her 90th birthday. Her works are diverse and spanning various fields of art such as painting, collages, sculpture and exhibits. Curator and fashion researcher Yaara Keidar will take us on a journey following the stormy life of Kusama, in a lecture on subversive art and fashion, Louis Vuitton, madness, collapse, and back to glory. All along the way we will be accompanied by polka dots.

Tel Aviv - New York City

How does a Tel Aviv designer, with a safe job as a designer in a large fashion company, find herself ten years later when she is a historian and fashion curator in New York? The answer is not always immediately "find" - but sometimes actually have to search.

In a personal meeting, filled with emotion and humor, and accompanied by breathtaking images and videos, Ya'ara Kedar tells of her personal path: the planning - and the surprise. The uncertainty of the road, failure and success. She tells frankly about the mistakes that turned out to be the most right thing - and the long way and the search - to feel at home.

Rotem Carmi Lecture

Writing a blog and lecturing for three years about the story of our lives and the ability to overcome a crisis. Just nine years ago our lives turned upside down when the glamor of the man with me was diagnosed with ALS. Zohar, an air force man, and I, a social worker, parents of three small children, decide that despite the "bad decree," life, love and choice are stronger than anything else! In meeting me, I emphasize the places of power and choose to reduce the anger, the helplessness and the difficulty (which often visit the lives of all of us) Sharing with you our daily decision to choose each time anew - to look from a different angle, to give meaning and value to our family life. Precisely at this point in life where there is a certain risk of taking the routine for granted .... I invite you to meet with me - to peek into a place where roads are less clear. I have no doubt that this will touch you, too, in the elections and decisions of your life. I invite you to aspire with me for a moment from the choices initiated optimistically despite everything, Because from day to day it seems to me more and more that we all can.
* Any income beyond the payment to Rotem will be donated to ALS in Israel

IAC Cinematec

IAC Cinematec was founded by Dr. Etti Inbal to introduce the US public to Israeli films, film makers, and daily life in Israel in an effort to create an Israeli-American community of film fans, who can share in the experience and enjoy dialogues about the films. Films are screened with English subtitles and attended by a guest director, actor, or a film professional, who will discuss issues related to the film in English.

Shoelaces
The movie "Shoelaces" tells the story of a complicated relationship between an aging father and his special-needs son, whom he abandoned while he was still a young boy. Reuben's (60) kidney's are failing and his son Gadi (35), wants to donate one of his own kidney's to help save his father's life. However, the transplant committee objects to the procedure claiming that Rueben, acting as Gadi's sole legal guardian, does not have the right to authorize such an invasive procedure. Gadi, who recently lost his mother, is afraid of losing his father as well. He feels he finally has the chance to do something meaningful; to become a man and stand on his own. He's furious with the committee's decision and sets out to fight for his right to save his father's life. Through the film's portrayal of a relationship full of love, rejection and co-dependency, it manages to shed some light and question the importance of human life, human connection and if life is even possible without it either one of them.

Hazon CSA

2016 Hazon Community Supported Agriculture at the JCC
Build an evolving relationship with your food, the land on which it is grown and with the farmers who grow it by buying a share in a local farm and receiving fresh, organic produce on a weekly basis. Our HAZON CSA partnerhsip runs from late spring to the middle of the fall. Join us in helping steward the livelihood of regional farmers and be part of the locavore movement.
A full share of vegetable will average 7 - 10 vegetables each week. Pick-up be 22 Tuesdays with final start and end dates to be confirmed once we see the spring weather. Fruit, egg, butter and sweet tooth shares available, after a mandatory full or half vegetable share is purchased.
