The Kaplen Jewish Community Center on the Palisades
The Kaplen Jewish Community Center (JCC) on the Palisades, located in Tenafly (NJ), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a welcoming “home away from home” for all who pass through its doors. We strive each year to maintain the highest standards for our programs and facilities, and are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the individuals and families that we serve. From infants to seniors, each year, we offer a variety of programs and services that strengthen an individual’s personal identity and allow them to engage meaningfully with members of the community through enrichment, education, arts and culture, health and fitness, and so much more. We are also proud to offer an extensive array of critical programs and services to children, families in need, seniors, and individuals with special needs.
About the 2017 JCC Sports Night of Champions – November 29
The 1st Annual JCC Sports Night of Champions is a community-wide event featuring father and son, Phil and Chris Simms as the keynote speakers. This premier fundraising event will take place on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades and encourages participation from all generations at the JCC and the community-at-large. In addition, the evening will honor Joseph Taub with the Lifetime Achievement Award who has made a significant impact on the JCC and the sports community. Funds raised from this event will support scholarships for children, families in need and seniors at the JCC.
JCC Scholar Athlete Awards Program Overview
The JCC Scholar Athlete Awards Program honors student-athletes in their senior year who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, their schools, and within their communities. Whether you're the lead scorer or the most spirited team player, we want to hear how you have taken the skills you've cultivated in the locker room and used them to create a powerful, positive impact on the lives of others around you.
Two JCC Scholar Athletes (one male and one female) will each receive $3,600 in college scholarship money for their excellence on their sports teams, in school and in their communities.
- Embody good sportsmanship and strong moral character.
JCC Scholar Athletes are trusted and respected members of their schools and communities. They have built strong relationships with and will leave a lasting impact on other students, administrators, and community members.
- Be passionate and committed to empowering the community in which they live. JCC Scholar Athletes have made a significant long-term commitment to improving the lives of others.
- Be a confident and enthusiastic leader.
JCC Scholar Athletes are role models. They are poised, honest, and passionate leaders who take on challenges for the greater good.
- Display academic excellence.
JCC Scholar Athletes are intellectually curious, set high academic goals for themselves, and excel in their studies.

- Strong and Courageous
In order to be eligible for the award, the applicant must:
- Be a current high school senior
- Gain acceptance to a university/community college for the 2018 summer/fall term
- Be a current member (in good standing) of a high school sports team or be involved in after-school sports (e.g. intramurals, martial arts, etc.)
- Have maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher from 9th grade to first semester of 12th grade
- Be a resident of Bergen County (NJ)
The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades will review all applications in coordination with the Sports Night of Champions Board and key staff members of the JCC. Awardees will be notified at the beginning of November. Scholarship awards will be presented at the Sports Night of Champions event on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. All applications will be kept in confidence.
