The Middle East Unraveled

with Howard Stoffer
Dr Stoffer will discuss how the unraveling of the neighborhood around Israel has created a fundamental dilemma that is being debated in national security circles in Israel and elsewhere.

On one hand Syria has had its military capabilities greatly degraded by the civil war there.  On the other hand, the case can be made that Israel needs to raise its military vigilance in the face of growing extremist threats from Al-Qaeda in Syria and Iraq.  Moreover, Iran may look more or less threatening, depending on how one looks at the interim nuclear agreement with the Western Powers.

Dr Howard Stoffer is Associate Professor in the National Security Program, College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, University of New Haven.  He is  also a senior advisor to the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force, Department of Political Affairs, in the United Nations.
