Jazz Musicianship (Theory & History)

Learn about jazz theory basics: intervals, chords, basic harmonic progressions, voice-leading, scale theory, and form. The class includes analysis of basic jazz tunes, such as the blues and “rhythm changes”, discussion of jazz phrasing, listening, and interpretation. Examine jazz from its origins to the present by listening and watching various jazz artists perform on recordings and videos. Students observe, listen to, and learn about historical jazz figures, genres, and styles. Historical examination will provide the basis for understanding the evolution of musical trends and ideas.
