Thurnauer Chamber Music Series: Happy Birthday, Leonard Bernstein!

Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918.  To celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, we present this all Bernstein program of chamber music including a piano trio written in 1937 while he was a student at Harvard University, Meditation from Mass written at the request of Jackie Kennedy for the inauguration of the Kennedy Center, several songs including one written for children called “I Hate Music” and, of course, an arrangement for violin and piano of the iconic music from West Side Story.  Courtenay Budd, sopranoSharon Roffman, violinClancy Newman, celloThomas Sauer, piano Soprano Courtenay Budd, a first prize winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions and a Metropolitan Opera National Finalist, has performed throughout the United States in operas, with orchestras, as a recitalist and as a chamber musician in repertoire ranging from Bach and Handel to contemporary music such as works by composer David Del Tredici. The New York Times praised her "gleaming sound" and "impressive stamina." Violinist Sharon Roffman, prizewinner in the 2003 Naumburg Foundation International Competition, made her solo debut with the New Jersey Symphony in 1996. Since then, Ms. Roffman has forged a unique career distinguished by her versatility; she is equally sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader and music educator.  Pianist TBA. Cellist Clancy Newman, first prize winner of the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg International Competition and recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant. He is both, a performer and a composer. Pianist Thomas Sauer is a member of the Mannes Piano Trio and a frequent collaborator with instrumentalists such as Midori, Misha Amory, the Brentano Quartet and Colin Carr. Series made possibly by a generous contribution from Eva Holzer and the Konikow Chamber Music Fund.Currently enrolled music school students are entitled to a complimentary ticket.
