Senior Recital: Cassandra Bartels, voice

Voice student of Emma Brondolo. Performing music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Ravel, Faure and others. With pianist, Jiyoung Kim.

Cassandra Bartels is a graduating senior from Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, NY. She has attended the Thurnauer School of Music since age 6, when she began taking piano lessons with Steven Masi. Although her career in piano came to an end by the close of her middle school years, she continued to study at the school with Emma Brondolo both as a member of the Young People’s Chorus and as a private voice student. Her experience in the chorus brought her to the stage of Carnegie Hall twice, singing a solo both times. She also has been a member of the NYSSMA Conference All-State Mixed Choir (Dr. David Fryling), the NAfME All-Eastern Honors Women’s Choir (Dr. Sandra Snow), and the NAfME All-National Honors Mixed Choir (Dr. Amanda Quist). When not singing, she can be found keeping old mud good company in the lab at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, doing ballet to the best of her abilities, or selling bread at the local community center. She will be attending Barnard College in the fall to pursue her mantra that “rocks rock” and hopefully discover how deep one really must be in order to be as deep as a metamorphic rock.

Zachary Glick, 18, is a long-time student at the JCC Thurnauer School of Music. Zach began studying classical guitar under the direction of Seth Himmelhoch in 2003 at the age of 3. After developing an interest in the clarinet in fourth grade, Zach began to play as part of his school band and subsequently started studying privately at Thurnauer with Don Mokrynski. Zach has been an active participant in school ensembles, his high school marching band and wind symphony, and he participated in the French Woods Concert Band for four years. Zach has played clarinet as a member of the Teaneck Community Band and is principal clarinet for the Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Zach is a member of a chamber ensemble at Thurnauer. Zach participated in the 8th and 9th annual Lauring Guitar Master Classes with Colin Davin and Rupert Boyd, respectively, and in the 2017 and 2018 Kaplan Honors Recitals. Zach was also selected to participate in a master class at the William Patterson University Guitarfest with Carlos Barbosa-Lima. Zach earned first place in both the 2018 Prima Volta Music Competition and NY International Music Concours for classical guitar and performed at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Zach serves as student representative on Thurnauer’s Music School Committee and will be attending Eastern Music Festival this summer. In the fall, he will be continuing his music education at the University of Chicago while also earning a degree in molecular engineering.
