Sarah Gottesman Lubin Program For Creative Arts & Crafts

Sarah Gottesman Lubin was an avid crafter who especially enjoyed the soft arts of quilting and needlepoint. She was an active member of the Pomegranate Guild. After her passing in December 2007, the Sarah Gottesman Lubin Program for Creative Arts and Crafts was established in her memory at the JCC so that others could explore and enjoy the exciting world of crafts and culture. This endowment provides opportunities for people to experience the sheer love and joy of creating something of beauty with their own hands. Pre-registration required for all creative arts classes.

New! Reclaiming My Time

Program is intended for ages 45-60. A series of events for people who want to DO.

Take in Art on the Bowery
Join art expert/tour guide Ronnit Vasserman and see how the Lower East side has transformed from a slum to a fashionable art hub. Visit galleries exhibiting acclaimed artists and view murals by edgy street artists. The tour will conclude at Louis, the fashionable café in the PUBLIC Hotel on Chrystie Street. Includes bus to and from the JCC.

Hike the Hudson River Valley
Admire the dramatic scenery while hiking up to Anthony’s Nose. An experienced hiking duo will lead us on the trail at a moderate pace. We’ll take in the vistas of the Bear Mountain Bridge from up above as well as the river and surrounding mountains. Our timing should provide us with optimal foliage viewing. We will provide directions to the hiking site.

Taste Wine at Trendy Grape D'Vine
Sip wine like a sommelier at Grape D’Vine in Sparkill, NY, as a wine educator guides our tasting. Sampling a variety of wines, we will be sure to find a few that suit your palate. Whether you’re a wine geek or a vino newbie, this evening will be big fun. You might want to make dinner reservations at the wonderful restaurant next door, D'Vine Bar.
*Note: This outside venue is not Kosher Certified

Now that there’s time to have experiences, be sure to have them.

Dr. Ruth at the JCC

Dr. Ruth at the JCC, really!

We know Dr. Ruth as the therapist with the heavy accent who spoke frankly about intimate matters on her call-in radio show. She certainly is that, but what maybe you didn’t know is the fascinating life she led before.  Ruth Westheimer escaped from the Nazis at age ten aboard a Kindertransport. She was a sniper with the Haganah in Israel before immigrating to the US where she worked as a maid before becoming a professor and a celebrity.

Come hear Dr. Ruth discuss the role of resilience in her life and how we can apply it to our own lives. She recently wrote a book for children on this, Roller-Coaster Grandma: The Amazing Story of Dr. Ruth.

Dr. Ruth may just speak about and take questions on the other thing too… skillfully handled in the context of a family program!
